Vanessa contracted my services very early in her pregnancy with plans to birth at Seasons Community Birth Center in Thornton, CO. A few months later, we were all surprised to hear that Seasons was forced to close their doors due to corporate funding being pulled. I immediately called Vanessa and while devastated, we started talking about alternative birthing locations in the Denver area. Fortunately, the community got together and worked diligently at finding a way for Seasons to stay afloat and they began down the road of establishing as a non-profit organization. Vanessa transferred care back to Seasons as soon as she was able. This was my first birth back at Seasons and it felt like coming home.

I got a text at 10:40am that contractions were 3-5 minutes apart, lasting 30-40 seconds and had been occurring for about two hours, but were still pretty manageable. A short hour later I received another text that they were headed to the birth center and would like me to meet them there.

I walked into the most serene and calm birth space with light music, deep breathing, gentle light coming through the gorgeous film on the windows. I watched Oscar gently touch and caress his wife, whispering words of encouragement and love in her ear. She was inward, eyes closed, swaying and breathing, moving her fingers across wooden combs. Occasionally she would open her eyes and a soft smile would fall across her lips as she made eye contact with Oscar.

Soon it was time to get out of the water and her body moved her to the bed where she was ready to push. With so much strength and courage, her husband never leaving her side, she brought her second baby, a boy, earthside. The midwife helped her gently bring him to her chest and they became a family of four.
